Pentagon approves deployment of Louisiana National Guard
Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said the troops will support federal law enforcement agencies, including the Justice Department and the Department of Homeland Security, in enforcing federal laws and addressing high levels of violent crime in New Orleans and other metropolitan areas in Louisiana.
The National Guard will remain under the command of Governor Jeff Landry, with a mission focused on enhancing public safety while reinforcing federal law enforcement operations, Parnell added.
He described the deployment as reaffirming “the Department of War's commitment to supporting our interagency partners and the safety and security of our nation.”
The move follows similar deployments by President Donald Trump, who previously sent National Guard troops and US Marines to Los Angeles and Washington, DC, and is planning further deployments to Memphis, Tennessee. In June, hundreds of Marines and thousands of National Guard members were dispatched to Los Angeles to quell unrest linked to his immigration policies.
